ABOUT US

Who We Are

The Freedom Center for Independent Living (FCIL) provides services that are consumer-controlled, community-based, cross-disability, nonresidential and is a private nonprofit agency.  FCIL offers the following I.L. core services:

– Information and referral;
– I.L. skills training;
– Peer Supports;
– Individual and systems advocacy; and
– Transition Services from nursing homes and other institutions to the community, provides assistance to those at risk of entering institutions, and facilitates transition of youth to postsecondary life.

Other services necessary to improve the ability of individuals with significant disabilities to function independently in the family or community and/or to continue in employment are also available; such as, Emergency Preparedness information and training.

The FCIL understands the often daunting challenges individuals with disabilities and their families face during and following a disaster or other emergency.  Individuals with disabilities and their families need actions and planning before disasters.

We remain firmly rooted in our rich history while reaching toward a more accessible future. We celebrate the unique strengths and experiences of our community, working collaboratively to create a world where disability rights are valued, upheld, and expanded. Together, we are forging a path towards a more inclusive and just society with Access For All.

Advocacy

Freedom Center for Independent Living staff assists consumers to take action on their own behalf (self-advocacy) to research and attain access to the goods, services and service providers in their communities. Systems Advocacy training is also provided, in order to ensure that the rights of people with disabilities are protected. Advocacy efforts are initiated to respond to proposed legislative changes and/or the need for increased funding and services to improve the lives of people with disabilities. Community participation becomes a key element in maintaining and preventing changes to important laws which protect individuals with disabilities and their legal rights.

Freedom Center

empowers persons with disabilities by providing the programs, services and individual support needed for them to discover and develop their individual talents and abilities. This empowerment enables them to better control their quality-of-life; and interactions with the environment, their families and their communities.
