Testimonials
“My Story” by Shawn G.
I am 28 and have disabilities. I have been a consumer and volunteer for about two years. I came to the Freedom Center for Independent Living because my mom suggested that I might benefit from their services. The staff is great and really cares about helping you find the help you need.
On the anniversary of when George W. Bush signed the Americans with Disabilities Act, I joined the Freedom Center on a trip to Rehoboth Beach, DE and joined other great organizations in advocating for people with disabilities and celebrating differences. The Freedom Center goes on many other outings throughout the year to local events including base ball games and picnics.
The Freedom Center also provides many workshops which are free and open to anyone. I enjoyed the Nutrition workshops as well as Money Management. There have been workshops on Emergency Preparedness, Public Transportation, and Social Security as well.
Once a month the Freedom Center has Peer Support where a group gets together to support each other. These meetings sometimes have a guest speaker who speaks on a topic the group is interested in learning more about. Peer Support meetings are often followed by games, arts and crafts, or movie night.
I have recently joined the Sunshine Club which is a group involved in helping people in the community see that people really do care. Peer Support, outings, and Sunshine Club have allowed me to become more comfortable in social settings and speaking.
Thank you Freedom Center for being in my community, helping, and advocating for people with disabilities like me!
