“My Story” by Betty Lou S.
In 2005, I was no longer able to work because of my disability. I was very fortunate to find the Freedom Center for Independent Living. The staff spoke with me and gave me information and the resources that are available to me. My Independent Living Specialist helped me fill out paperwork that needed to be done.
Since becoming a consumer, I have been very involved in volunteering at the Center. I also have gone on multiple social recreational outings offered by the Freedom Center. This allows me to interact with other consumers and have a great time.
The Freedom Center has seminars on Medicare/Medicaid, job placement, and stress management, just name a few. These seminars are based on what we as consumers ask for. We have monthly Peer Support Group meetings where we have Game Night, Arts n’ Crafts night, and Movie Night.
I’m also the Vice President on the Sunshine Club. The Sunshine Club visits consumers in nursing homes, or in the hospital. We send birthday cards and every few months we celebrate consumers birthdays with a small get together.
