Sunshine Club

The Sunshine Club is a volunteer program designed to offer support to seniors and persons with disabilities residing in Southern New Castle County, who are home-bound, hospitalized, living in an institution, or may have difficulty participating in community-based activities. First and foremost, Sunshine Club members demonstrate that someone really does care by visiting, calling, monitoring and encouraging, as well as, providing opportunities for home-bound and those in institutions to participate in social activities (e.g., going to the movies, going out to lunch).

The Club gathers birthday information from those individuals wishing to take part, and has a birthday celebration each month for those with birthdays that particular month. Club members send participants get-well, anniversary and birthday cards; as well as plants/flowers. In addition, Club members transport or arrange for transportation to and from community activities and Freedom Center events for those wishing to participate, but do not have the means.

If it were not for the Club members, these individuals would have little or no social contact and/or participation in community life, which can lead to depression, and/or compromised mental or physical health.
