May 2006 -- The National Council for Independent Living (NCIL), Washington DC. "Ending the Institutional Bias."

The Freedom Center went to D.C.! Your staff participated in numerous workshops, networking with centers though out the entire U.S.A. ending with a march and rally at our nations capitol to help end institutional bias for our consumers in nursing homes. Take a look at our active role in ending the forced institutionalization of people with disabilities in the State of Delaware. What do we want? Freedom! When do we want it? Now!

January 2006 -- Our First Peer Support Meeting, a Great Success! Sharing our stories and laughs. Our consumers not only brought forth a sense of self expression, self confidence and comedy, but a true willingness to grow our center with pride and dignity.

Rainbow Of Colors

Rainbow of colors after the storm
Bright and bold as can be,
Different colors like a kaleidoscope
As far as the eye can see.

The beauty of this amazing thing
After the sun comes out, and after the rain,
Beauty God has created so breathtaking
beyond compare.
God gives us such gracious gifts,
And some of us take for granted

And little do we care.
Stop and take in the little things,
As well as the bigger ones
God gives the beauty
For all to see!

Story by John S.     (3/30/2006)

You gals at the freedom center are about the only ones on the planet that know what a timely response means, and from what I've been through with Social Security, Medicare and all, I feel truly blessed by the way you get back to me. I thank you ever so much for that.

I have nothing but praise for the center. Way back when I first started, things were at the worst for me. There was a very nice lady with the hearing impediment, glasses along with the receptionist, a man and woman on scooters. It was a while back and I forgot their names. It is where it all started. At that time, there wasn't much there. Only three desks, a couple of chairs and maybe about three computers, and a handful of pamphlets telling about the establishment. Then things got really bad and I dropped out of commission for a few months. Desperate to get my new life in some kind of order while going through a torrid divorce, I went back to the center because I knew there was someone that would actually listen. It was then I first met Vonda and Cathy. It was Vonda that took the ball and started running with it. This period brought me out of my worst times, it gave me direction, plus helped me during my most difficult struggle. The rest is history. I'm at the point now where I will just pop in and just say hi.
