Independent Living Skills
Independent Living Skills Training is designed to assist a person with a disability obtain the skills and knowledge they need to function independently within the community. Our Independent Living Specialists support and understand every person’s unique concept of independence. What being Independent means to one person and/or situation is different from another. Therefore, what one person feels is vital to their independence may not be seen as important to another. This is why every participant is:
Provided one-on-one consultation to assist them in identifying their specific needs and goals.
Assisted by an Independent Living Specialist in developing their Personal Empowerment Goals based on those needs, and the specific steps vital to achieve their goals.
- Armed with the skills, resources and knowledge needed to navigate the bureaucratic system and advocate for their rights, they are better prepared to pursue the quality-of-life they desire.
Skills training may be one-on-one or in a group; and topics may include using public transportation, managing a budget, use of assistive equipment, coping with stress, hiring and supervising a personal care attendant, voting, social/recreational activities, and healthy living.
