My Story by David D. February 21, 2006
I am David D. My wife and I have both received help from the FCIL-DE. We came to Delaware from Alabama, so we were not familiar with agency services here. Someone mentioned the FCIL-DE and when we were walking down Main Street, we saw the office. We were impressed by the atmosphere we found here.
My wife, Judy, needed to have her hearing tested. When we met the Independent Living Specialist (ILS) she gave us information and instructions on how to go though the system. She gave us contacts and Judy was able to get a hearing test and a hearing-aid at no cost to us. We are very grateful for the help, but especially the kindness and care we received.
Even though we were both working, we didn't have health insurance, so we could not get the testing supplies for our diabetes, which we both have. The Center steered us to the right places and we got emergency relief: testing strips, insulin and syringes.
I had been working at the Sunday Breakfast Mission in Wilmington, but I got an infection in an ulcer on my foot. Being diabetic, I had to stop working to attend to this condition. I had been out of work for about a month. When I thought I could return to work, the ILS again helped me by composing cover letters and working with me to improve my resume. She would call me about jobs available in the paper and otherwise encouraged me to obtain interviews.
During this time, all the people in the office were courteous, gracious and helpful. I was able to return to the Mission where I was rehired.
I would tell people in need to go to the Center where they will be treated with dignity and care. If the staff can't help directly, they will refer you to an appropriate agency where you will see results. You will reach the right people.
My wife and I experienced great relief when we became consumers at the Freedom Center. Hearing-aids are expensive, but through the work of the Center, we were able to obtain them at no cost to us.
Thanks to the Center, we are both doing well. It's a comfort to know that if we need help in the future, the Center will be there for us.
